Gavin Maxwell

While staying on the Isle of Skye, was reminded (not likely to forget, it affected me so much when I read it and saw the film as a youngster) of Gavin Maxwell and his -for me- seminal book, Ring of Bright Water.

On the bookcases of the house we stayed in were so many books; such a great range too, but a couple by Maxwell himself.

I dipped into one: Raven, Seek Thy Brother, and was very taken by the epigraph (if this is the correct word?) in the front of the book.

It went as follows and is, I believe written by Maxwell himself:

“For what has died and what remains

in the small world I can perceive

For what seems dead and what is living

and crying still from the wild swan’s skeins

For all I loved and all I grieve

For all that’s endless and forgiving

of those who’ve been allowed to enter

that vast periphery that has no centre

For fire and rock and rain and storm

and for the matrix of my home.

For Edal (1958 – 1968)

Whatever joy you had from her,

give back to nature.”

Gavin Maxwell

English: Maxwell's Otter. The memorial to Gavi...

I set it out here as it was written in the book: hope you can take something from it.
